Julia Mihály (*1984) is a composer, performer and singer at the border of Contemporary Music, Performance Art and Electroacoustic Music, based in Frankfurt/Germany.

She connects her voice with live-electronics using different kinds of controllers like gaming devices, motion sensors and hacked toy instruments to modulate and extend her vocal sound. Focussing on interactivity and the progress of electronic chamber music she develops her own music software individually configured for her various performances.

The crossover of different music styles is probably the most distinctive feature of her music. In 2017 she is awarded with the annual commission for a composition by the Bayerische Akademie der Schönen Künste. During the season 2016/17 she is Artist in Residence with her Duo CLUBbleu at the State Theatre Darmstadt. In autumn 2016 she received a commission for a voice&electronics performance by the NTU CCA Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore. In 2015 she was invited as a musical director to perform the piece STIMMUNG by Karlheinz Stockhausen at the Suntory Hall Tokyo. In 2018 she received commissions by Deutschlandfunk and Kulturfonds Frankfurt/RheinMain.

Since 2012 she is part of the duo CLUBbleu, that links its influences from electroacoustic music to Electronica, Click&Cuts and Death Metal. Besides this she collaborates regularly with other musicians, composers and contemporary music ensembles.

She performs regularly at festivals and in concert series for contemporary music such as Heroines of Sound Festival @ RADIALSYSTEM V / Berghain Berlin (GER), Suntory Hall Tokyo (JPN), La Biennale Musica di Venezia (ITA), International Summer Courses for New Music Darmstadt (GER), Lab.30 Festival for Sound Art Experiments Augsburg (GER), ArtScience Museum Singapore (SG), CAMP 13 festival for visual music Cluj (RO),  Opernfestspiele Bavarian State Opera Munich (GER), SPOR Festival Arhus (DEN), Zeitkunst Festival Rio de Janeiro (BRA), Achtbrücken Festival Cologne (GER), Sound and Music Computing Conference (SMC) Helsinki (FIN), NTU CCA Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore (SG) and Ruhrtriennale (GER). Concert tours have taken her to Brazil, Singapore, Japan, Germany, France, Italy, Hungary, Poland, Austria, Denmark, Finland, Turkey, Romania and the Sultanate of Oman.

Her compositions have been broadcasted by German radio stations like Südwestrundfunk (Swr2), Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR Klassik), Hessischer Rundfunk (hr2 Kultur), Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR3) and Deutschlandfunk.

Julia Mihály studied classical singing with Prof. Norma Enns and electronic composition with Joachim Heintz at Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media (HMTM Hannover), and completed her studies with workshops at the ZKM Karlsruhe, STEIM Amsterdam, Stockhausen Summer Courses Kürten and the International Summer Courses for New Music Darmstadt.

Julia Mihály is currently teaching „Composition and Technology“ at the Studio for Electronic Music and Acoustics (SELMA) of the HfMDK Frankfurt.

During the winter semester 2016/17 Julia Mihály was invited for a visiting professorship within the study programme Sound Arts – Musik und Medienkunst at the Bern University of Arts (HKB), in representation for Prof. Dr. Michael Harenberg. For several lectures and workshops about Composing with Field Recordings, Electronic Composition and Composing for Voice and Live-Electronics she received invitations by the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (institute for composition and electroacoustic), ADM Nanyang Technological University Singapore, Akademie für Tonkunst Darmstadt, University for Music, Drama and Media Hanover, Julius-Maximilians University Würzburg and the State University for Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart.

In the past years she received an artist-in-residence scholarship at the Atelier Klangforschung (Studio for Sound Research) at the University of Würzburg (2012). She has also been awarded numerous scholarships and prizes, including the International Music – Scholarship by the Art Foundation of North Rhine – Westphalia and the 1st Prize for Interpretation of the Stockhausen Foundation for Music (2007 and 2009). In 2014 she has been a selected participant of the Composer Performer Workshop at the International Summer Courses for New Music Darmstadt.

Julia Mihály is board member of the German Society for Electroacoustic Music (DEGEM).
